Abacus earns Best Political Documentary at 2017 Critics' Choice Awards
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail by director Steve James earned the Critics' Choice Award for Best Political Documentary last night at the 2017 Critics' Choice Documentary Awards.
Producers Julie Goldman and Chris Clements accepted the award on the film's behalf. Members of the Sung family, who were also nominated for Most Compelling Living Subjects, were present at the ceremonies as well.
The film garnered three Critics' Choice Award nominations including Best Documentary, Best Political Documentary and Most Compelling Living Subjects.
Goldman relayed a thank you prepared by James, "We especially wish we could share this moment with the true heroes of this film: Mr. and Mrs. Sung, and their family, who showed great courage in defending their bank and community against an overzealous prosecutor...This award confirms what we filmmakers discovered firsthand––the Sungs are an inspiration to all who resist the unequal application of justice in America, no matter where you live."
The Sung family and Abacus have recently gained an onslaught of attention in relation to revelations that Manhattan District Attorney, Cy Vance Jr., had dropped a criminal case against Ivanka and Don. Jr. Trump after receiving a visit from campaign donor Marc Kasowitz.
The film next screens at the Virginia Film Festival on November 12, as well as the Coronado Island Film Festival on November 12 (Steve James in attendance.) Find all upcoming screenings here.
